I Took a Mud Bath in a Volcano in Cartagena — And It Was WILDER Than I Expected

If you’ve ever dreamed of bathing in a volcano, let me introduce you to one of Colombia’s quirkiest, messiest, and most memorable experiences — the El Totumo Mud Volcano (book here), just outside of Cartagena.

Yes, you read that right. A volcano (book here) filled with warm, silky mud, where people from all over the world strip down, climb in, and float effortlessly in its dense, mineral-rich waters. It’s one of those “what did I just do?” travel moments, and I had to try it for myself.

The Journey to El Totumo

Getting there is part of the fun. About an hour’s drive from Cartagena, the ride gives you a peek at Colombia’s countryside and quiet villages. I booked a half-day tour (highly recommend for first-timers), which included transport, a guide, and even a rinse-off service — more on that in a second.

As we pulled up, I saw what looked like a giant dirt mound rising out of nowhere. “That’s the volcano?” I asked. Yep — it’s only about 50 feet tall, with a staircase carved right into the side. It may not look like much, but what it lacks in height it makes up for in unforgettable weirdness.

Stepping Into the Mud

Climbing the volcano (book here) with the Caribbean sun beating down is no joke, but the moment I reached the top and looked into the crater — pure magic. The mud is a deep gray color, thick and creamy, and strangely inviting.

The best part? You float. No matter your size or swimming skill level, the mud holds you up like you’re weightless. It’s warm, it’s squishy, and it honestly felt like being inside a lava lamp. There are local attendants inside the volcano who help guide you in, give a quick massage (for a tip), and even take photos on your phone if you want to capture the moment.

Rinse-Off Time (It’s a Whole Scene)

After soaking, laughing, and covering myself in mud head-to-toe, it was time to rinse off. I climbed back down and was led to the nearby lagoon, where a local woman started scrubbing me clean in the most motherly, no-nonsense way. (Let’s just say modesty isn’t really part of the deal here — you’ve been warned!)

It’s part awkward, part hilarious, and all part of the experience.

Why You Should Go

Would I do it again? In a heartbeat. The El Totumo Mud Volcano (book here) is a perfect mix of nature, culture, and pure absurdity. The minerals in the mud are said to be great for your skin, but honestly, the real benefit is the story you get to tell afterward.

If you’re ever in Cartagena and want to break up the beach days with something totally unique — go take a dip in a volcano. Just bring a towel, a change of clothes, and a sense of humor.
